Enabling Outlook 2000 Mail Logging

Normally Outlook 2000 does not log Internet, SMTP, and POP sessions.
To turn on this feature:

Start Regedit
Go to Hkey_Current_User Software Microsoft Office 9.0 Outlook Options Mail
Create a new DWORD
Give it a name of Logging
Give it a value of 1
After this, 3 files will be created in the C:WindowsTempOutlook Logging directory.

InetXP.txt logs the Internet session
Pop3log.txt logs mail-retrieval activity
Smtplog.txt logs mail-sending activity

Notepad Date / Time Stamp

Pressing F5 in Notepad inserts the current date and time stamp at the location of the cursor.
If typing .LOG as the first line in a Notepad document, the current date/time stamp is added automatically every time upon reopening that file.
These tips work with all Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP/2003 (32-bit) and Windows/WfWG 3.1x (16-bit) versions of NOTEPAD.EXE (located in %windir% = main Windows directory/folder).

Enable Error Mode

In Windows NT4, 2000 and XP it is possible to initialize Windows in Error Mode, a special debugging mode of the “stripped down” Safe Mode.
In Error Mode a small popup window (basically a core dump) shows up whenever an application crashes, similar (but more detailed) to the well known “This program performed an illegal operation” error message.
To enable this feature, run Regedit and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlWindows
Modify the “ErrorMode” DWORD [REG_DWORD] Decimal value from 0 to 1.
Reboot when done.
ErrorMode valid Decimal values:
0 = both system and program error popups enabled (default).
1 = system error popups disabled, program error popups enabled.
2 = both system and program error popups disabled.”

Enable Compatibility Tab

To enable the Compatibility tab in Windows 2000 just like in WinXP/2003, all you have to do is start a command prompt, type this and hit Enter:
regsvr32 %systemroot%apppatchslayerui.dll

One Click Shutdown

Follow these directions to create a one-click shutdown shortcut:
Navigate to your desktop.
On the desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut).
You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path.
Enter one of these as the path:
Use this path if your operating system is Windows 95, 98, or Me:
C:windowsrundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows
Use this path if your operating system is XP:
SHUTDOWN -s -t 01
If the C: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace “C” with the correct letter of the hard drive.
Click the “Next” button.
Name the shortcut and click the “Finish” button.
Now whenever you want to shut down, just click on this shortcut and you’re done. Also, if you want to make life better and faster, you can right-click the new shortcut you just made, go to Properties, and type in X (or whatever letter) in the Shortcut Key box.

Messenger Spam

If you’ve received some anonymous messages popping up on your windows XP or 2000 systems, it may be messenger spam, people are taking advantage of the messenger service that allows administrators to monitor servers and send out service messages over corporate networks. Friends of mine have been complaining about it, but now that we know where it’s coming from, we can stop it.
open the Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools icon and then double-click the Services entry. In the list of services listed in the resulting Services dialog box, locate the messenger entry, and double-click it. Click the Stop button in the service status section and then in the same dialogue box, change the start-up type to Disable

HOW TO: Change the Volume Licensing Product Key on a Windows XP SP1-Based Computer

Because of changes in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows XP-based computers that use a leaked product key that is known to be available to the general public may not be able to install SP1 or automatically obtain updates from the Windows Update Web site. For example, you may experience the symptoms that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article when you install SP1

Stop 0x000000A5 Error When You Are Installing Windows XP

The bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor for an updated bios. If you are unable to obtain an updated bios or the latest bios supplied by your vendor is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode during text mode setup. To do this, simply press the F7 key when you are prompted to install storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F7 key was pressed–it will silently disable ACPI and allow you to continue your installation.”
