Error “Automation server can’t create object” while changing the User Account properties

When you try to change the User Account properties via the User Accounts Control Panel, you may receive this error:

Automation server can’t create object

This is due to the missing registry key given below:

HKCRCLSID{66e4e4fb-f385-4dd0-8d74-a2efd1bc6178}

This problem usually happens if you un-register the file shimgvw.dll (as an attempt to turn Off the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer)
RESOLUTION

Click Start, Run and type REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

  1. I’m getting this error message when I try to change user accounts (Windows Welcome Screen). I’ve run REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL as you suggest and am advised the run was successful, however, I still get the error message in user accounts. Do you have any further suggestions?

    Thanks

  2. i 2nd steve’s comment. doign this “Click Start, Run and type REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL ” does not solve out problem 🙁

    any other ideas?

  3. Thanks! Worked ok for me!!

  4. This solution unfortunately did not work for me; I still get the error message, but ONLY when clicking on “Change the way users log on or off.” Clicking on the other two options in User Accounts (change an account & create a new account) does not generate this “automation server” error. (Running XP Home sp2.)

I guess I just don’t have the specific problem this solution addresses. Thanks anyway, though!

  8. Worked Great to fix my problem. Thankx

  9. well i’ve been fighting for 2 days..for this fukin error..

and i found the cause….which is..
1> whenever you try to access system files from your machine…system security layer won’t allow it..

    2> windows script 5.6 update..

    solution..

1> open your web browser..go to internet options..choose
security tab..after that click on custom level
    button..

after that..set options for download signed activex control…set to enable..
next download unsigned activex control..set to enable..

(setting this will clear all the problems..
because when user try to run that script..
at run time..user trying to load activex control..
which won’t be created & hence the error..)

and try to keep the custom settings..medium low or low..

and windows script 5.6 ..update..i’m not sure..about that
    crap..

in case if my written shit won’t work..
you should try for window script 5.6 update..

sorry guys i’m lil..drunk right now..

  10. Has any one figured out steve and franks problem? mine is the same…I’m getting this error message when I try to change user accounts (Windows Welcome Screen). I’ve run REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL as you suggest and am advised the run was successful, however, I still get the error message in user accounts.

  11. On April 16th – Deamon posted a fix, however he was a little drunk and not well in communicating.

I am not sure what the problem is exactly, however I do know this works.

    Go Here.
    http://www.macropool.com/en/download/scripting.html

Attempt to register the vbscript.dll by using reregister vbscript.dll or regsvr32 vbscript.dll.

If that fails, download Windows Script 5.6, install and then run the corresponding command.

    Presto.

No More annoying “Automation server can’t create object” while changing the User Account properties.

  12. Thanks for this – I got the missing pictures for my user’s accounts back instantly with this tip!

  13. Have had this problem for oveer a year.
Downloaded 5.6 and every thing is fine. Thanks
