STOP 0x0000009C MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION Error Message in Windows XP

This behavior occurs because your computer processor detected an unrecoverable hardware error and reported it to Windows XP. To do so, it used the Machine Check Exception (MCE) feature of Pentium processors or the Machine Check Architecture (MCA) feature of some Pentium Pro processors. The error may be a result of any of the following:
System bus errors.
Memory errors that may include parity or Error Correction Code (ECC) problems.
Cache errors in the processor or hardware.
Translation Lookaside Buffers (TLB) errors in the processor.
Other CPU-vendor specific detected hardware problems.
Vendor-specific detected hardware problems.

  1. Seems to only happen when i am playing a game, watching movies on the internet, etc. Its acting like my video card. But my video card hasnt been removed or ne thing so i dont know why it would be that

  2. Hello Steven,
Has this only recently started happening? Which video card is it and when did you last update the drivers?

    Ali

  3. I have the same problem. My video card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE. I have the most recent drivers for the card. I also am running an AMD 64 3000+ processor. From the research I’ve done, the error has something to do with the 64 bit processor. Any ideas?

  4. I have a workstation that seemed to have display the machine_check_exception error as well. I have a duel opteron 64 240 with a Quadro FX 4000. this is a fairly new Alienware system (a month old).

  5. Same deal hear guys. Have had no probs for about 9 months, then am getting blue screen and these errors, but usually when playing games (Call of Duty, World of Warcraft). I suspect it is a graphics issue too, I have a Gforce 5900. Could it be overheating somewhere. I notice that after playing for about 10 minues, you can hear a fan kick in very loudly – then 5 minutes later I get the crash. Any thoughts would be useful, thanks very much 🙂

  6. You can hear clicking? can you check to see if something is touching the fan? If you have another desktop pc, you could try your card in there (i know its not exactly the same) and see if you get the same STOP message.

  7. I have been running this same system for months. SOMETIMES i would get this error after closing a video application. like guild wars, movies, counter-strike, cool edit pro. applications that use alot of memory, and video mem. I’m assuming this is some how linked with a memory issue.

Today im getting the same error, over and over, my computer will not start up. As I’m typing this post I turned the computer tottally off to make sure the memory is tottally clear. if I go and boot it up in a few mins and it works, im almost sure memory is the issue.

Although I dont have a solution, I am going to try something I used before with memory issues, in hopes it will help out. Maybe anyone else at their ends would give it a shot aswell. I’m going to run tweak ram. I dont really want to explain what it is/what it does, all the documention can be found by searching google. try that out,, it might be the answer.

  8. I’m having the same issue in win2k3 server. Its giving the same issue and error code. I’m running a amd64.

  9. I have the same problem with my Alienware. I just had them send out a replacement chip for the 2nd slot. My computer is absolutely solid with 1 512mb chip in slot 0. Adding more than 1 chip causes the problems u are talking about. Try to run with only 1 memory stick. I’m thinking the memory timing is too aggressive, or that the motherboard is broken and can’t keep the communications between slots in sync.

    Any other thoughts?

  10. I have been getting this error, but unlike all of the other posts here, it only happens when loging on after coming out of hibrination. Recently replaced MB, Memory etc. Any ideas? I suspect memory, but nothing to support my thoughts of being memory.

  11. i have this problem wtih my e-machine T3410…it’s running a Sempron 3400+ 512mb ram onboard GeForce 6100 the machine is stock..only thing i did was add a second hard drive and a dvd burner but the error started well after the two installs…it seems to be worse while playing games (doom 3, fable etc..) but will restart at idle once in a while…if anyone has any ideas what this is and if it’s something i can fix…or should i replace the machine (it still has the return prolicy from the store i bought it) i would love it if there was maybe a simple fix….if anyoen can help me drop me an e-mail (edgemaster191@gmail.com) thank you everyone
    Justin

  12. I am having the same error. I read on Microsoft’s site another thing that can cause this error is a power supply that is noisy, one that sends noise into the circuitry. I am wondering if maybe that’s what it is in my case because I do have a very cheap power supply. One that came with the case..

  13. Im having the same problem, one of my HD reboot itself by no reason (i think)and when the HD cant reboot propebly the CPU crashes and gives me an 0X0000009C. The HD just stop working and then i hear i “click” and then i can hear i boot up again, then to a sertain level it stops, and then it clicks again and so on. I have to Tap my finger on the HD to get it to start again and then the “busy lamp” on the computer lights up, i check the taskmng but no overload. And then, it comes. The Blue screen. The CPU cant work with the HD again and crashes. Im trying to Update BIOS to see if any good can come out of that.

  14. Think this might be a Power issue… My machine worked perfectly but after i bought a 7800 GT i get these errors at random..? Well thats my humble opinion though. Gonna test it though, just bought a 400w quality NorthQ PSU… so I guess i will find out soon 🙂

  15. I get this all the time, but only when I walk away from my computer. I can sit here and it’ll run for hours and the second I take a step towards my printer, BAM, crash. I’ve turned off power save, turned off the auto-shutdown of the network card, turned off screen savers and all that. I’m swapped the ram into other slots. I’m not sure what it is. I keep wondering if it’s not enough power or something.

I have a GeForce 6600 GT Video card, 2 gigs of Ram (2 1gig sticks 3200), ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 mother board with an AMD Athlon 64 bit 3500+ chip on Windows XP.

  16. I fixed mine by updating my SATA drivers for my motherboard.

  17. Hi guys…i’m having the same BSOD…I’ve replaced RAM,HDD(was on SATA and replaced with an ATA one), my Video Card and My Ethernet Card….i’m going to test a new power suply and another SATA drivers…but can’t be sure if that’s the problem..if anyone solves this before i do…please mail me at muiarici [AT] yahoo [DOT] com.(i’m sure you figure out this mail address). Thanks in advance!

I have the same issue too. I do notice one common denominator in all the posts which is 3 letters AMD. i have yet to see one with intel.
    I wonder if that’s the issue here…!

  19. well well well…
i just tried a few different tweaks in the BIOS. i have an ASUS A8V socket 939 MB with amd 64 3500 system. i overclocked it 5% from the BIOS and ever since the machine runs fine. i am yet to see a BSD. i left machine on 24/4. so far so good. i am keeping my fingers crossed…!

  20. I checked this error out on google and was found this site. Its pretty interesting that it seems to be all AMD’s! Guess what guys, lol. I have AMD! 🙁 Again i dont know the full cause of this error. Im an OEM system builder and have tried different hardware, software etc. Problem does not effect me too much but i still dont like it.

Im running an AMD 64 3700+ (939), 3 x 1GB DDR 400, bit Fatality An8SLi, Ati Sapphire Radeon X800 GTO, Maxtor sata Hard drive, Samsung lightscribe DVD-RW, running on 32-bit windows xp as some of my software isn’t supported with 64-bit windows.

Was running an AMD FX57 but that was faulty and out of warrenty. I already know my mainboard has issues with mxtor drives but i know a way around this so not too bothered about that.

My pc was fine but i have recently replaced my CPU fan with a thermaltake ruby orb2. This error has appeared a little more frequently since then.

Also i have a spare 1Gb stick that my pc does not accept. I think its because windows has a memory limitation but i know there are ways for my mainboard and operating system to accept this. When i try 4GB i lose graphics and don’t even have BIOS.

Can anyone help me out??? Would be much appreciated.

  22. UPDATE: Ooooops…
i spoke too soon…! My machine doesn’t BSD everyday now…may be once a week… now i can kinda live with that… i am still running it at 5% overcloaked. i have no idea what it means..perhaps my AMD 64 is rotten?
    anyone with any new resolutions???

  23. Just to settle your mind on the idea that this is an AMD issue I am currently working on an Intel with the same problem!!

  24. Drew… that would be the 1st one then.
what kind of mobo do you have? i have worked with computers for over 10 years now. this is one problem looks like without a solution…!
this is a thorn for my brain.

  25. Heya Guys. Im Running On An AMD 64 3200+ 2Ghz 1gb Ram. Asus A8V Deluxe Mobo And Have Had the pc For Over A Year and Neva Had a Problem. I Upgraded My Graphics CArd From A GeForce 4200 Ti to a Geforce 6200 After My Pc Screwed Its Self With Viruses And Re Installing WIndows. It Ran Fine For Months And Then One Day Suddenly Didnt Like It And Gave Me This Error.

My Dad Fried My Hard Drive So I Had To Buy Another One. Ever Since It Has Been Playing Up more Often. I Have Replaced The Ram With A New 512MB Stick And It Suns Fine Whilst Im Using It. If I Take One Step Away TO gO To The Toilet It Kills It Self With This Error.

    Thanks Alot In Advance.

  26. My machine still runs fine at 10% overclocking. recently i changed it to 5% and it was crashing every day. between AMD and ASUS, there’s something going on. did anyone try replacing their CPU or MOBO?

  27. sir mujhy ufone or warid ya any network which use in pakistan ka free gprs use karne ka formula chaye plz hel me my contact number is 0333 2597735 i am waiting plz help me i know u ar genius plz help me

  28. i’ve got a p4 with this problem so i’m sure its just a coincidence thet thet’re all AMD’s. from the sounds of things, if you guys are overclocking your cpu’s i’m not supprised you’re having problems

  29. OK. it seems everyone’s problems has been resolved. My computer run without BSOD only at 10% overcloacking through the BIOS. if i change that to anything else it will give me Machine_check_exception error. recently it got even better. if i turn on the webcam, play a video etc, will cause the machine to freeze immediately. I am going to replace my CPU chip and if that doesn’t work i am going for the motherboard. hopefully i can get through ASUS to get a replacement.

  30. P4 1.440. 256MB PC133 RAM (correct for motherboard) The windows server 2003 sp2 install is 2 months old running fine until today. Upon Admin login or randomly at other times, Blue Screen of Death, MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION 0x0000009C. ( ECC is off, bios can’t turn it on. Can’t turn off caches in BIOS either. Safe mode w/ network functional, but apps quit randomly. MEMTEST+86 v1.7 reports 0 errors in RAM. DMA Controller on this hardware is mapped at 0x00000094 to 0x0000009F. Smart status for the drive is off. primary only HDD, Auto configured. Both cpu and power supply fans running. CPU is at 98 F degrees consistently. Ambient temp is 60-65 deg F consistently.

    Just an FYI

  31. i get the same error but only on one user account. i logged into the administrator account and after a few minutes it displays the MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION error but when im logged on to another user account nothing happens. i’m on the other user account right now. now my question is ..how the hell does that happen… i read the comments on this site and theres no mention of something like that happening.. HELP!

  32. What i would suggest(even tho this t. is very old) is to check ur software installed…
do u have any security program installed?
antivirus firewall antispyware..??? anything that has residnt protection…. if yes.. uninstall it and test ur machine… seee what happens… it sure help alot of my clients 🙂
